Boxee, on the other hand, has a call center in India with reps who's English is perhaps their 3rd or 4th language, and you will wait on hold for at least 30 minutes every time.Ĭonclusion - The Boxee is a must have if you want to watch Live Broadcast TV. Customer Service - I haven't called Roku, because nothing has had any problems. Those are the three main files used on file sharing and p2p sites, so, for me, it is a wash.ĥ. Roku allows you to play MKV files, which boxee doesn't. Media support - Boxee allows you to use play AVI files through a USB, which Roku doesn't. Roku's version of that, at least for me, is Hulu Plus, because that is all I record, an it runs $7.99 a month for Hulu Plus.Ĥ. Cloud DVR - Boxee offers a cloud dvr in just a few cities, but if you want unlimited access and recordings it will run $10 a month. Plus the hundreds of other cool channels available on the Roku. With Roku, I am able to get live streams of CNN, al-Jazeera, FoxNews, etc and many local TV stations. So many channels because they allow 3rd party channels. But for channel selection, Roku 3 is the overwhelming winner. You cannot get Hulu Plus on the Boxee, so that is a big negative for me. Channels - Boxee offers a free three months of Netflix if you buy it, but to note that offer expires June 1, 2013. If you use an antenna and are indoors I recommend Leaf Plus Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna, don't waste your money on anything else ( I got more OTA channels than the the FCC said were available, after other indoor antennas were useless.) If you are looking to cut the cord this is the way to go.Ģ. In either case, the boxee provides TV listings for about 2 hrs of the major broadcast channels only. The Boxee has an additional step plug in an antenna or cable to the back of the Boxee. But to actually activate the devices Roku was far more streamlined and simple. Plug it in to an outlet and an HDMI cable to the TV (both require an HDTV). In terms of physically setting them up, it was about the same. Setup - The Roku 3 was FAR easier to activate than the Boxee through the computer. Many of you will be interested in a comparison between the two.ġ. As a disclaimer I own a Roku 3 and the Boxee TV.
